RCMP officer stabbed while making an arrest

A 40-year-old female has been charged after an RCMP officer was stabbed during her arrest.

On December 26, 2020 police had received a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a home on Wilkinson Crescent in Portage la prairie. The responding officer located the adult female walking along Crescent Road East.

When the officer approached the female suspect he noticed that her clothing was not appropriate for the weather and she appeared to be under the influence of a drug.

The suspect wasn’t able to identify herself or even respond properly to the officer’s questions. The suspect tried to get away from the officer and fell to the ground.

As she was being placed under arrest the officer felt a pain in his right thigh and realized that he had been stabbed. The officer was able to complete the arrest. A search of her person uncovered a capped needle and a large homemade knife that had been tucked into her waist band.

Police say that backup arrived and took the female into custody while the injured officer drove himself to hospital. He was treated and released.

The female is facing charges for her alleged involvement of Assaulting a Police Officer, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Police continue to investigate.

The suspect remains in custody.
