RCMP officer dies in Perimeter Highway collision

Manitoba RCMP are mourning the loss of one of their own.

On Friday, December 13, 2019, around 4;00 pm Cst Allan Poapst was travelling westbound on the Perimeter Highway just east of Highway 7 when a pickup travelling in the other direction crossed the median and collided head-on with Cst. Poapst’s police vehicle.

Poapst died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was injured and taken to hospital.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy was noticeably shaken when describing the events leading to the officer’s death.

MacLatchy said that the officer had three teenage daughters and was a huge Bomber and Jets fan.

“Allan is gone but he will never be forgotten by the many officers who worked by his side and by the people of Manitoba who he so proudly served,” said MacLatchy

Poapst had been an RCMP officer for nearly 13 years serving his entire career in Manitoba.

RCMP with assistance from Winnipeg Police are investigating the fatal collision.
