Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has laid a charge of assault against RCMP Constable David Mitchel Eardley in connection to his alleged involvement to injuries received by a 15-year-old female suspect.
According to the IIU, Eardley responded on October 21, 2019, to a call for assistance at a home in Flin Flon. Police determined that the teen was under arrest and had to use force in order to take her into custody.
During the arrest the teen was injured. She was taken to hospital, treated and released back into RCMP custody.
The IIU said that they first learned of the incident more than a week later and although the suspect did not sustain any serious injuries they decided to investigate the incident in the public interest.
Upon conclusion of the investigation IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and authorized the assault charge.
The officer will appear in a Flin Flon court on July 14, 2020, to answer to the charges.
