RCMP lay charges after man refuses to self-isolate

RCMP in Gillam have charged an adult male after he refused to comply with a Public Health Act order to self-isolate.

Police say that on April 25, 2020 officers were called after medical staff at the hospital in Gillam to the man that he had to self-isolate for 14-days while waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test.

The man told hospital staff that he was not going to self-isolate and left the hospital on foot.

Officers searched the area for the male and found him in the community. Police told the male that he needed to return home to self-isolate but the male refused.

The charge of Failing to Comply with a Provincial Emergency Order under the Public Health Act was laid and a ticket was issued.

RCMP say that between April 21 and April 27, 2020, they received 99 calls related to COVID-19.

Most of the calls were related to more than 10 people gathering at a location and not respecting Public Health orders that are in place.

Police say that most of the calls only required education by officers or did not fall under the purview of the RCMP.

Seven verbal warnings were issued when officers attended some of the complaint locations.
