RCMP investigating two fatal collisions on Monday

Manitoba RCMP is investigating two separate collisions that claimed the lives of a 9-year-old and 18-year-old male on Monday, August 17, 2020.

RCMP responded around 4;40 pm to an off-road vehicle collision on Peguis First Nation.

Police say a 9-year-old boy from the community was operating a quad when he drove out of the bush and crashed into another quad being driven by another youth from Peguis.

The 9-year-old was thrown from his quad. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

Investigators say neither of the youth were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.

Virden RCMP were called around 11:25 pm to the area of Highway 1 and Provincial Road 257 in Virden for a collision.

The vehicle being driven by an 18-year-old male from Russell had been going eastbound on the service road when the driver lost control in a curve and rolled into a ditch.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that the driver did not have his seatbelt on and that alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision.

Both collisions continue to be under investigation.
