Police received a report of a drowning at a property on Old Bridge Road in Portage la Prairie on Monday evening, June 19, 2023.
When officers arrived on the scene they were told that the child had been out on the property with family when he wandered away from the group. He was found a short time later in a retention pond near the home.
The two-year-old was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.
RCMP continue to investigate.
