RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating a house fire in Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation that claimed the life of an 11-year-old child.

Police say that at approximately 6;50 pm on March 25, 2023, they were called to a structure fire in the community and learned a child was still inside the burning structure.

Community firefighters, safety officers and area residents were working together to fight the fire and find the child. An 11-year-old male was pulled from the home and taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

Seven people (four adults & three children) were inside the house when the fire broke out.

A 65-year-old female community member who was helping to get the victim out of the building sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined
