RCMP investigate officer-involved shooting

Just before 4:00 am on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, RCMP in Portage la Prairie responded to a break-in at a local business.

Responding officers located the suspect vehicle on Highway 1 near the community and attempted to stop it. The suspect attempted to run the police cruiser off the road and rammed it several times. The patrol car became pinned between the suspect vehicle and the trailer it was towing.

Police say that the officer was able to get out of the vehicle as the suspect swerved towards the officer before fleeing. The officer sustained minor injuries. During the altercation, the officer involved fired their sidearm toward the suspect’s vehicle.

Other officers were able to arrest the suspect shortly afterwards. The 27-year-old male suspect was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The suspect remains in hospital but is facing a number of offences for his alleged involvement including Attempted Murder on Police.

Due to the nature of the incident RCMP contacted the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba who are mandated to investigate when there is a police-involved shooting.

The RCMP Major Crime Services unit is leading the investigation.
