Two children have died in two separate drownings in Northern Manitoba.
On June 15, 2023 RCMP were called after a 23-month old male was found in the lake outside his home in Garden Hill First Nation. The child was taken to the nursing station and then taken to Winnipeg where he died on June 18. The child was in the care of his siblings at the time of the drowning.
A second drowning occurred on June 18, 2023 in St. Theresa Point First Nation.
Police say that a group of children were swimming when two 10-year-old females swam out too far and began having difficulty. Both of the girls went under the water. A bystander was able to rescue one of the girls. She was treated at the nursing station and released.
The other girl was located by a First Nation Safety Officer. She was taken to the nursing station where she was pronounced dead.
Island Lake RCMP is investigating both incidents.
