RCMP help rescue victims of fatal Thompson house fire

Tragedy struck early Friday morning, January 24, 2020, when a fire broke out in a Thompson home that claimed the life of one person.

RCMP along with Thompson Fire and Emergency Services were called to a house on fire on Centennial Drive East in the northern community.

Police were the first on scene and immediately helped neighbours rescue an 89-year-old woman through a first-floor window. She was taken to the hospital after telling police several other people may be inside.

A 61-year-old male was able to escape the blaze by jumping out a window and a 21-year-old male ran through the fire in an effort to escape. The younger male suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Emergency crews were unable to account for a 20-year-old female who was thought to be in the burning structure but due to the intensity of the blaze and the compromised structural integrity of the building they were unable to search for her.

The body of a female was located on Saturday, January 25, 2020, and police say an autopsy is scheduled to confirm her identity.

Several members of the community are being praised for helping to rescue those inside the structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation
