On Monday, December 14, 2020, Peter Nygard was arrested by Manitoba RCMP in Winnipeg.
The 79-year-old fashion mogul was placed in custody after the US Attorney’s Office in New York City made a request to Canada to begin extradition proceedings against him so that he can face charges in the United States.
Nygard is currently under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York Police Department after a number of women came forward with allegations of sexual assault. He was indicted on charges of sex-trafficking, racketeering and other crimes involving dozens of women, some of them underage.
According to prosecutors Nygard used the influence of his company and its employees to recruit and maintain both minors and adult females for his sexual gratification over a 25-year period.
Nygard stepped down from heading his company, Nygard International, in February of 2020, after U.S. investigators raided his New York offices and his home in California. After the raids a number of large customers dropped his clothing lines.
According to RCMP, Nygard is currently in custody pending a bail hearing and further extradition proceedings.
