The Independent Investigation Unit and the Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services are intensively examining the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting incident that unfolded in Sandy Bay First Nation on April 20, 2024.
The incident started with a a distress call regarding a weapon-related disturbance at a residence within the community. Amaranth RCMP mobilized to assist the Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS).
According to reports, officers responded to the call for assistance at a residence on Ridge Road South, concerning a male allegedly wielding a weapon and making threats against a female.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the male was located a distance from the residence, leading to a confrontation resulting in the discharge of a service firearm and the male’s subsequent demise.
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel discovered the suspect had fled. RCMP and MFNPS officers initiated a pursuit, locating the 27-year-old male in an open outdoor area, armed with multiple weapons.
An encounter ensued, during which an RCMP officer discharged their firearm, resulting in the suspect’s injury. Despite efforts to save his life, the suspect succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers sustained physical harm during the operation.
As the investigation progresses, the IIU is urging individuals with pertinent information, witnesses, or video footage to come forward. The IIU will seek the appointment of a civilian monitor by the Manitoba Police Commission.
While investigations are underway, authorities indicate they will not be disclosing additional information.
