Raw sewage flow into Lake Winnipeg prompts warning for Gimli area beaches

Damage to the town of Gimli waste-water treatment system during construction in the town released untreated waste into storm drains and possibly into Lake Winnipeg.

As a result, the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority is advising beachgoers to not go into the water until further notice. The affected beaches are Gimli Beach, Loni Beach and South Beach.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018 water samples were taken from the beaches. The fear is that the water may be contaminated by E. coli. Results from the tests are expected back later today, July 26, 2018.

Officials say that the breach has been repaired and no more waste-water has been released.

Anyone with symptoms of waterborne illness, such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea should seek medical attention.
