Rail Safety Week comes this year on the heels of five people loosing their lives at Manitoba rail crossings since August 21st, the latest last Friday.
The purpose of the week is to increase awareness and understand the importance of safe practices around railways.
According to Operation LifeSaver Canada between January and August of this year there were 36 deaths across the country and more than 110 incidents along railways. Two people died and one was injured during that time in Manitoba with five other fatalities reported since then in the province.

“Railway safety is a shared responsibility. Most rail accidents are preventable, and we hope to bring public awareness to prevent further injuries and damages caused by collisions at crossings,” said Schuler.
Rail Safety Week is an annual event and runs this year from September 21 until September 27.
