Winnipeg Police are investigating an early morning incident Sunday, March 28, 2021, that resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old on unrelated outstanding charges.
Around 1:00 am police were involved in the pursuit of a vehicle that began in the 600 block of Wellington Avenue.
In an email to News 4 police say that officers became interested in the vehicle due to suspicious circumstances but were unable to elaborate due to the ongoing investigation.
The vehicle was found abandoned about five minutes later on Furby Street just north of Sargent Avenue.
A search for the occupants of the vehicle began as multiple police patrol units, K-9 units, supervisors and the Tactical Support Team swarmed the area. Police attempted to set up a confinement area between Cumberland Avenue to St. Matthews Avenue and Balmoral Street to Toronto Street.
As the K-9 teams tracked the suspects on foot other officers engaged with a 27-year-old male in the area who took off running. Officers chased the male down capturing him on Maryland Street just north of Ellice Avenue.
The male was placed under arrest and treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital in stable condition.
Police say that although the man was processed on a number of outstanding warrants it is unclear if he was involved in the initial pursuit.
The investigation continues.
