PUBLIC ADVISORY | POLICE WARN OF TRAFFIC TICKET EMAIL SCAM

The fraudsters are at it again and this time it looks like Winnipeg drivers are the target.

Winnipeg Police (WPS) are warning residents to be cautious regarding emails being sent city wide to people that say the recipient has been identified as a negligent driver and that as a result they owe a fine which is now due.

WPS has said that they are not associated with the emails in any way and that the campaign appears to be a scam.

A similar scam cropped up in Calgary earlier this year.

Traffic offences are NOT sent to drivers via email. They are either handed to the driver at a traffic stop or mailed to the address on record. If you receive a ticket for infractions in a school zone, construction zone or and an intersection with a “red light” camera the offence notice is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. These notices contain specific information about the make and colour of the vehicle, the date and location of the offence, the type of infraction and the section of the highway traffic act that has been contravened and lastly a photographic image of the vehicle involved in the infraction.

If you receive an email regarding an offence notice DO NOT CLICK ON AND LINKS within the email.

Report these scammers to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. at 1-888-495-8501.
