The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler and as we head into fall, Manitoba is proclaiming it Provincial Hunting Day tomorrow.
The day was first proclaimed in 2009 by then Premier Gary Doer to celebrate the role hunting plays in conservation and wildlife management.
Current Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires encouraged Manitobans to celebrate the day at a special event being hosted by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation at the Brandon Gun Club tomorrow. Activities include a calling contest, hunting demonstrations and other exhibits.
“Hunters are part of our heritage in Manitoba and important to our economy,” said Squires. “As we celebrate our roots, we want to stress the importance of personal safety and we urge everyone to stay safe out there.”
Safety tips include suggesting hunters:
- always handle firearms carefully;
- never shoot unless they know what is beyond their target;
- make sure someone knows where they’re going and when to expect them back; wear proper hunting clothes and dressing for the weather; and
- always take a survival and first aid kit along.
