Province-Wide Emergency Alert System Test set for Wednesday

The Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Emergency Management Organization has announced that a province-wide test of the National Public Alerting System, known as Alert Ready, is scheduled for May 8, 2024, at 1:55 p.m. CDT. This system test will broadcast across multiple communication channels, including television, radio, and compatible wireless devices.

The purpose of this test is to ensure the alerting system functions correctly during actual emergencies. It will assess the system’s end-to-end performance and reliability, confirming that it operates as designed. Additionally, the test serves as a public education tool, familiarizing Manitobans with the appearance and sound of emergency alerts.

While the test alert is expected to reach many, it may not be received on all mobile devices due to factors such as device compatibility, LTE network connectivity, cell tower coverage, and individual device settings. The Emergency Management Organization encourages all residents to verify their devices’ compatibility and settings to ensure they can receive future emergency alerts.

This testing is a critical component of Manitoba’s commitment to public safety, ensuring that in the face of life-threatening situations, the community is alerted promptly and effectively.
