In an effort to reduce potential ice-jam flooding Manitoba will begin ice cutting operations along the Red River this week.
The ice cutting operation uses remote controlled ice-cutting units and three Amphibex icebreakers to cut and break about 28 kilometres of ice on the Red River between Selkirk and Netley Creek. The channel is about 100 metres wide.
“Predicting when and how our rivers ice will break up naturally is complex due to varying conditions,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler. “We have committed to investing in strategic flood-control operations in order to protect Manitobans in the chance of a high water event due to ice jamming.”
Notices have been posted in areas where ice-jam mitigation crews will be operating. River users are reminded to stay off the ice in these areas. Ice fishers are reminded to remove huts and other materials in the area.
