On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, a 67-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested after members of the Manitoba Finance Taxation Special Investigation Unit (SIU) caught him in the process of delivering illegal cigarettes.
Investigators seized 112,700 contraband cigarettes, $2,483.15 in cash and 94 grams of marihuana during the arrest.
The cigarettes in question did not have the required ‘Manitoba’ mark.
Graham Thompson is facing charges criminal charges for his alleged involvement as well as a mandatory triple tax penalty of nearly $100,000.
It is estimated that the province would have lost just over $33, 246 in tax revenue had the cigarettes been sold.
Thompson could also face fines up to $10,000 and/or be jailed for up to six months.
