Manitoba Finance Taxation Special Investigations Unit (MFTSIU) and the RCMP have arrested two Winnipeg men and seized 71,000 contraband cigarettes.
MFTSIU says that the two accused, aged 26 and 44, were charged on December 12, 2018 and could face up to six months in jail along with fines up to $10,ooo each. On top of that they face a triple tax penalty of $62,835 if convicted.
The province says that they stood to lose $20,945 in tax revenue if the illegal smokes had been sold.
