PROVINCE TO RAISE FLOODWAY GATES ON FRIDAY

Water level at James Avenue expected to rise to 19.1 feet by Sunday

Ice in the Red River Floodway control structure is no longer at risk of flowing into the floodway so on Friday morning the gates will be raised to divert river flow.

River levels are significantly increasing across southern Manitoba according to Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre.

As water moves through the rivers and tributaries people are being reminded to keep an eye on local waterways because flood conditions can develop quickly.

Drivers are reminded that it is dangerous to drive though moving water because the depth can be unpredictable and the speed of the current can push vehicles off the road.

Homeowners inside and outside of the city should check their sump pumps and hoses to ensure they are working properly.

Ice conditions on rivers and lakes are extremely dangerous and it is advised not to venture out on to them without knowing the condition. Ice at this time of year can be weak and unable to support weight.
