Province to provide high-dose flu vaccine to residents of personal care homes over age 65

Manitoba has announced that for the upcoming flu season they will be providing residents of personal care homes (PCH) a high-dose flu vaccine for those over 65 years of age.

According to the province, the vaccine offers a higher level of protection against three of the strains of influenza expected this fall and winter.

According to Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Kelvin Goertzen studies have shown that those over 65 and that live in a PCH are at higher risk of getting complications or dying due to getting the flu.

The number of people admitted to hospital from PCH facilities is more frequent during peak influenza activity.

The minister said that public health officials will be monitoring how effective the new high-dose vaccine is so that they can make decisions about future vaccine programs.
