New magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner opens in Dauphin.
Premier Brian Pallister and Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen were on hand at the official opening Monday, December 17, 2018 in the western Manitoba city about 316 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
The new MRI is expected to perform about 3,500 scans per year which will reduce the need for patients to have to travel to Winnipeg or Brandon for scans. MRIs makes detailed images of organs and structures inside the body using magnetic fields and radio waves.

The province says that with increased capacity in Dauphin spaces at other MRIs will open up and reduce overall wait times for scans.
“We are working to transform the health-care system so that it provides easier access, shortened wait times and common standards of care for patients across the province,” said Pallister.
The current average wait times for an MRI scan in Manitoba is about 16 weeks.
“The opening of this new site builds on our work to reduce wait times to transform our health-care system,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen.
The new scanner and building for it cost about $6.2 million and is located at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre. The health centre is also in the midst of a $23 million construction project to build a new emergency department slated to open in mid-2019.
