Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre has issued a warning on thin ice conditions across Southern Manitoba.
Rivers, lakes, creeks, ponds and streams are in the process of freezing over but ice forming on them is still very thin. Rivers like the Red and Assiniboine still have areas of open water.
When bodies of water begin to freeze the thin ice may become covered by snow. The snow produces weak spots due to insulating effects.
Fast-moving water below the ice may also produce thin spots that would be hard to detect.
The province advises that you stay off all waterways until ice conditions become safe.
Ice conditions on the Assiniboine and Red rivers are expected to be dangerous until the middle of December.
