Province issues flood watch in Red River Valley

Manitoba’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch for the Red River from Emerson to the Red River Floodway inlet. The river is expected to spill its banks in some areas between April 8 and April 15.

Rain in the forecast is expected to bring 30 mm to most parts of southern Manitoba and Northern North Dakota. The rain along with the current snowmelt could raise river levels above their bank-full capacities.

The province says that water levels at James Avenue in Winnipeg is expected to peak between 17.3 and 18.3 feet between April 11 and 16 with the potential use of the floodway. Currently the Red River is at 15 feet at James Avenue.

Water levels along the Assiniboine, Souris and Pembina rivers are relatively low with no significant flooding.
