Province expands who can access the risk recognition program

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the Manitoba government expanded who can access the $120-million Risk Recognition Program.

When it was announced in May the program was limited to workers in health care, social services, justice, transportation, food and beverage and essential retail.

The expanded version of the program now includes hotel workers who work as reception, cleaners, maintenance, kitchen staff and servers as well as Business Improvement Zone staff.

To qualify, eligible workers have to have had a pre-tax income of less than $5,000 per month or a total of $12,500 total during the 2.5 month eligibility period (March 20 – May 29, 2020). They also must have worked a minimum of 200 hours during the eligibility period.

“By increasing eligible positions and income limits, and excluding overtime earnings, we will ensure the program continues to support lower- to middle-income workers and recognizes those who may have otherwise worked themselves out of qualifying through overtime,” said Finance Minister Scott Fielding. “Manitoba’s program continues to reflect the federal government’s intention of this cost-sharing program to recognize low-income Canadian workers who risked their own health to provide crucial services.”

The application deadline has also been extended until noon on June 29, 2020.
