Manitoba is cutting the number of vehicles they use by 400 in a move they are touting as a green initiative.
The move is expected to save the province about $2.3 million in operating cost and more than 8.8 million litres of fuel over the next five years.
Currently, there are approximately 2000 vehicles in the provincial fleet.
[jaw_quote author=”Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires” ]We are eliminating 400 vehicles and reducing the costs associated with running them, as well as eliminating the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with all those vehicles[/jaw_quote][jaw_clear]
Provincial staff who previously used the vehicles to travel to meetings will be encouraged to use video and conference calls whenever possible as an alternative to travel.
It is estimated that the elimination of the vehicles will also eliminate up to 4,000 tonnes of emissions annually.
Monitoring devices are going to be installed in all the light-duty vehicles, like cars, to track driving practices such as speed, mileage, idling and fuel consumption.
