Shortly after 5:00pm dozens of protestors marched into the centre of Portage and Main effectively shutting down the intersection.
They were there to support the Standing Rock Sioux in North Dakota who have been protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline for several months. The Sioux are concerned because they say the pipeline will desecrate sacred land and could contaminate the water supply.
The pipeline will carry almost half a million barrels of crude oil per day once completed and will span from North Dakota to Illinois.
Winnipeg Police were on hand directing traffic away from the protesters and also on social media asking people to avoid the area
There is a demonstration ongoing in the area of Portage Ave / Main St extending to Fort St. Please avoid the area if possible.
