On Wednesday, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) took measures to ensure public safety during a planned protest at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street. The protest, which began around noon, prompted the WPS to restrict traffic in the area.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation and at the request of the protest organizers, police resources were strategically placed out of view but remained in close proximity to the intersection. Vehicle access to the intersection was limited, and motorists who approached the area were turned away upon observing the protest.
At approximately 12:23 p.m., a motorist entered the intersection and had an altercation with several protesters, including a cyclist. Members of the Police Liaison Team spoke with the cyclist, who declined medical attention and further police involvement. The other protesters involved in the altercation had left the scene before police arrived. The driver of the vehicle remained at the location.
The WPS is continuing to investigate the incident, and no arrests have been made at this time.
