Stony Mountain Institution went into lockdown Tuesday morning over safety concerns.
Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said in a release that the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution.
Staff locked down the Maximum and medium security units at 9am so that they could do an extensive search of the prison.
Inmate visitations have been suspended until the sweep of the penitentiary is complete. The CSC has said that normal operations will resume as soon as it is safe for that to happen, probably in a day or two.
