Premiers show support for federal paid sick leave plan

Premier John Horgan from British Columbia, Premier Sandy Silver from the Yukon and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister released a joint statement on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, to show support for a federal paid sick leave program during the pandemic.

The three leaders said that paid sick leave is crucial for the safe restart of the economy.

The Yukon has already implemented a paid sick leave for employers.

With a national paid sick leave program employees would be able to stay at home when they are sick and continue to receive their pay so that the fear of not being able to pay their bills is removed.

Businesses would also benefit from the program with a boost in public confidence over the safety of visiting those organizations.

The statement from the premiers said “We will continue to work with the prime minister and other provinces and territories to move forward and ensure all Canadians have the protection they need during this pandemic.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier this week that the Canadian government would be looking into a possible federal program that would make sick leave benefits available.
