Man charged with attempted murder in Portage la Praire fire

RCMP in Portage la Praire rescued a 41-year-old woman from a burning building around 1:30 am Friday morning, February 15, 2019, from a 5th Street apartment. They had been called there for the fire and a possible domestic situation.

Police say that the woman had tried to leave but was prevented from doing so and held against her will by a 38-year-old male in the apartment.

When officers arrived they saw the apartment door open and the apartment full of smoke. Police pulled the woman from the basement suite then returned to evacuated the male. The man refused to go so police physically removed him.

Emergency crews evacuated the rest go the complex

An investigation into the incident has led police to believe the fire had been set by the 38-year-old male. As the female victim tried to leave she was stopped from doing so by the male and suffered injuries as a result of the fire. She is recovering in hospital.

Police have charged the male with attempted murder, Arson-Disregard for Human Life and Forcible Confinement.

The investigation continues.
