Winnipeg Police Service has closed Portage Avenue in both directions due to a collision at Empress Street on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
Around 4:00 pm parts of a crane that was being transported by a truck struck the Empress Street overpass and landed on the roadway.
Police have closed westbound Portage Avenue at Wall Street and Eastbound at St John’s Ambulance Way while they investigate the incident and remove the heavy equipment from the roadway.
Winnipeg’s Traffic Management Centre took to social media to warn drivers to avoid the area. They noted that drivers can also expect major traffic delays while the incident is active.

It is not known at this time if the overpass suffered any significant damage in the collision
