Point Douglas MLA Resigns

NDP MLA Kevin Chief announced on Wednesday that he is quitting politics to spend more time with his family.

The 42 year old MLA represented Point Douglas in the legislature since 2011. He served under Greg Selinger in a number of cabinet posts including Minister of Jobs and the Economy.

Chief said he wouldn’t discuss what he would do after provincial politics but he did say he wanted to focus on his family. Chief is the father to three boys all under the age of seven.

“He is a valued colleague and member of our NDP team. We will miss his experience, his wisdom, his guidance and his friendship.” said NDP Interim Leader, Flor Marcelino. “The job of MLA puts a huge demand on an individual, both in the Legislative Assembly and in the constituency. We were lucky to have such a dedicated individual working with our NDP team on behalf of the people of Point Douglas and all of Manitoba.”

“Kevin’s passion for, and commitment to, his community has been evident throughout his career.  Not only in his work as an elected official but also during the course of his career preceding politics,” Premier Brian Pallister said “I want to thank not only Kevin for his service, but his family for the sacrifices they have made in order for him to be able to serve the people of Point Douglas.”

Chief’s resignation is effective at the end of December and will prompt a by election by no later than the end of June, 2017.
