Police watchdog agency investigating in-custody death

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into the death of a 31-year-old male after he died in RCMP custody.

According to the IIU they became aware of the death on Monday March 30, 2020, after RCMP reported the March 26th incident to them.

RCMP had arrested an intoxicated man in the community of Oxford House just before 10:00 am. He was placed in the detachment cells but several hours later, just before 6:00 pm, he was found unresponsive.

Police took the male tot he nursing station. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and died on March 28, 2020.

Due to the incident involving an in-custody death the IIU has assumed the investigation and have requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.

The IIU is asking anyone with information or video footage that can help the investigation to call 1-844-667-6060.
