POLICE USE STOP STICK TO END HIGH SPEED CHASE

Several suspects arrested in stolen vehicle

A high speed chase came to an end after police punctured the tires on the suspect vehicle using a stop stick.

The chase started around 9:30 pm Friday, July 7, 2017 at Nain Avenue and Watt Street after they tried to pull it over after reports that the vehicle had disobeyed traffic control devices.

The suspects refused to pull over. Police initiated a chase but called it off once conditions became too dangerous. Officers deployed a stop stick and the vehicle stopped after getting stuck in a field at Lagimodiere Blvd. and Grassie Blvd.

Officers arrested three adult suspects. A 26 year old male has been charged with Possess Property Obtained by Crime, Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Possess Break In Instruments, Drive While Disqualified, Fail to Comply – Recognizance.

Stop sticks are easily deployed spikes in a plastic housing that can be tossed in the path of a moving vehicle. The spikes are hollow and when a tire runs over them the spikes break off in the tire leaving an open hole that quickly deflates the tires.

During the incident the stolen vehicle collided with a private vehicle causing minor damage. It also collided with a marked Winnipeg Police unit causing minor damage. One officer received medical treatment.
