Police to be part of working committee on landfill search

Winnipeg Police Service will be part of a working committee that will look into the feasibility of a search at Prairie Green Landfill in an effort to recover the bodies of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran. Harris,Myran, Rebecca Contois and a female referred to as Buffalo Woman are all believed to have been the victims of an alleged serial killer.

Earlier today, December 14, 2022, WPS Chief Danny Smyth met with Grand Chief Cathy Merrick and Chief Kyra Wilson to discuss the situation at the Prairie Green Landfill.

Previously police had said they would not be searching the landfill because the chances of finding the women’s remains were low.

Outcries from First Nation leaders and family members have put pressure on governments to commit to helping with a search. Last week the province ordered a temporary stop to operations at the landfill while a feasibility plan for searching the multi-acre property could be developed.

Prime Minister said during question period that the federal government would provide support to the city and province but did not elaborate on what type of support that would be.
