Winnipeg Police Service was involved in a standoff with a suspect wanted on a warrant. Neighbours told News 4 that officers had spent most of the day on Friday, March 31, 2023, outside the home in the 600 block of Aberdeen.
In an email to News 4 police say that just after 1:30 pm officers responded to an assault in the William Whyte neighbourhood. “The investigation eventually led them to a residence in the 600 block of Aberdeen Avenue in an attempt to arrest a suspect,” said a police spokesperson.
At around 8: 30 pm investigators learned that the suspect was inside the residence but refused to come out. Officers say that the suspect made comments that they would have to go in and “kill him” or that he would set the residence on fire.

Minutes before 12:00 am on April 1, 2023, Members of the Tactical Support Team arrived on the scene along with their armoured vehicle ARV-1 and quickly set up a large battering ram to the front of the vehicle.
Once tactical officers were in place they began calling to the person inside the home over a loudspeaker. At one point a single flash bang was set off by police followed by officers ordering the suspect out of the building with his hands up.
Over the next 30 minutes, police continued to blare sirens and order the suspect to surrender. Officers cut down a chain link fence in front of the residence a few minutes before ARV-1 was driven onto the front lawn and appeared to ram the front of the house.
At 12:42 am the 51-year-old suspect exited the home and was taken into custody. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, two counts of Assault with a Weapon, Overcome Resistance by Attempting to Choke, Suffocate or Strangle Another Person, Assault Cause Bodily Harm and three counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order.
The accused was detained in custody.
