Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers shot a suspect who had an alleged weapon late Sunday afternoon, November 24, 2024.
The incident happened shortly after 5:00 pm at a bus stop near the Staples store in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
According to the WPS, an officer was stabbed in the throat by the suspect as police were in the area conducting operations as part of the retail theft initiative.
In a video circulated on social media two officers can be seen ordering the male suspect to drop their weapon. When the person walks toward the officers they were shot several times, falling to the sidewalk. On the video ten gunshots could be heard.
Police, including the officer who had been stabbed, provided emergency care to the suspect and he was transported to hospital in critical condition. The suspect died shortly after arriving in hospital.
More than twenty police patrol units, multiple ambulances and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the incident.
WPS released more information regarding the incident shortly after 9:15pm on Sunday and confirmed that the incident was being investigated by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
