Serious Motor Vehicle Collision Leads to Train Derailment – Investigation Underway
On November 22, 2024, at approximately 3:09 p.m., a serious motor vehicle collision occurred on the Perimeter Highway at Fermor Avenue in Winnipeg. A semi-truck left the roadway and collided with a train, resulting in the derailment of several train cars. The 56-year-old truck driver was airlifted to the hospital by STARS Air Ambulance in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable, although he still suffers from serious injuries.
The Winnipeg Police Traffic Division is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or possesses dash camera footage to come forward and assist with the investigation. Assault with a Weapon on Transit Supervisor – Suspect Arrested
On the morning of November 22, 2024, at approximately 7:50 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an assault on a transit supervisor at the Fort/Graham area. Officers from the Downtown Foot Patrol Unit were nearby and were alerted to the incident.
The supervisor had boarded a bus to address a male passenger who had been sleeping on the bus for several hours. Upon waking and exiting the bus, the man created a torch using a can of hairspray and a lighter. He aimed the weapon at the supervisor, who managed to push the man to the ground and disarm him. Police swiftly arrived on the scene and took the suspect into custody. The supervisor was not injured.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Andrew Lawton HORZEMPA of Winnipeg, has been charged with Assault with a Weapon and remains in police custody.
Armed Robbery at Fast Food Restaurant – Suspect in Custody
In the early hours of November 23, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., General Patrol officers from the North District responded to a robbery in progress at a fast food restaurant located in the 1100 block of Main Street.
A male suspect, armed with a knife, entered the back-kitchen area of the restaurant, demanding food and threatening to kill the employees. The employees managed to secure themselves in an office and called 911. The suspect then used a fire extinguisher to spray the entire kitchen and restaurant area, rendering it inoperable, before fleeing the scene.
Police observed the suspect leaving the restaurant and promptly took him into custody. No injuries were reported in this incident.
The suspect, an 18-year-old male from Winnipeg, faces multiple charges including Robbery, Possession of a Weapon, Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Mischief Over $5,000, and Possession of a Scheduled Substance (Cocaine). He is currently in police custody.
