Winnipeg Police responded in force to an incident at the Forks late Saturday night, July 30, 2022.
According to the WPS duty office, officers were called to the area around 11:30 pm after two large groups of people got into an altercation.
Officers blocked access to the Forks and closed off the eastbound lanes of Esplanade Riel as they investigated the incident.
Members of the Tactical Support Team and general patrol, along with Air-1 searched the area behind the Canadian Human Rights Museum after one male believed to be carrying a handgun ran from police.
The duty office said that the suspect was soon taken into custody but officers believed he may have discarded the firearm and a backpack he was carrying. Police were able to find the backpack but have not been able to locate a the firearm. A search of the suspect uncovered a large. hynting knife. The backpack contained more than 206 grams of Cannabis worth about $1,186 on the street
A 16-year-old male has been charged for his alleged involvement with Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon, Possession of a Weapon, Young Person Possess more than the Equivalent of 5 grams Dried Cannabis (Cannabis Act)
The accused was released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada
