Police remind drivers to “Just Slow Down”

Multiple crashes since the snow arrived late last fall has prompted the Winnipeg Police Service to remind drivers to “Just Slow Down.”

An example of two crashes related to road conditions happened at the same intersection less than 20 hours apart.

Emergency crews responded to a collision around 9:15 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2020, at the intersection of Arlington Street and Notre Dame Avenue.

One person was taken to hospital in stable condition with unknown injuries.

Earlier in the day, another collision at the same intersection saw a car leave the roadway and crash into a brick wall sending the driver to hospital.

Winnipeg Police say that drivers should “just slow down” when roads are icy or snow covered.

In a release on Sunday, January 3, 2021, police offered a few tips for drivers to help prevent collisions during adverse weather and road conditions. These include plan extra time to get to your destination and drive to the conditions of the road.

Police remind drivers that in winter it takes a longer stopping distance for your vehicle stop. It is a good idea to purchase winter tires in order to get better traction on the road.

It is also important to be alert at all times when you drive. Watch for black ice as you approach bridges and overpasses. They tend to freeze first.

Road conditions can change quickly especially in Winter and drivers need to use caution, be aware of their surroundings and give themselves space between their vehicle and others.
