Winnipeg Police Service has released more information regarding the police standoff on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
Police say that around 6:15 a.m. on Friday. February 9, officers were called to a Boyd Avenue residence following an armed robbery. During the robbery a man in his 40s was shot in the lower body. A 25-year-old female was believed to have been forcibly removed by the suspects. The suspects fled before police arrived. The male victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition.
Early Saturday morning police believed that the female who had been taken was in an apartment suite in the 200 block of College Avenue along with one of the suspects involved in the robbery.
Officers were able to remove two suspects, a 46-year-old male and a 30-year-old woman. Both suspects were arrested. The female abduction victim also exited the suite. She had not been injured.
Two male suspects remained in the suite and refused to exit creating an armed and barricaded situation.
Over the next several hours a police set up a mobile command unit and brought in a crisis negotiator.
As the incident continued Tactical Support Team (TST) officers fired tear gas into the apartment. As the TST officers were in the hallway near the suite a shotgun was fired through the suite door and wall. Pellets from the weapon struck three officers causing non-life-threatening injuries.
By late morning police had all suspects in custody.
Jeremy James Kayseas, 43, of Winnipeg, is charged for his alleged involvement with Assault Cause Bodily Harm, Discharge Firearm with Intent, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Disguise with Intent, Break & Enter & Commit Aggravated Assault (Dwelling House), and multiple firearms-related offences. He was detained in custody.
A 50-year-old male, a 46-year-old male, and a 30-year-old female, of Winnipeg are facing drug and firearms-related offences. All three were released on Undertakings as mandated by the Criminal Code.
Officers seized a 12-gauge shotgun, a .22 calibre rifle and various ammunition from the apartment.
Members of the MAjor Crimes Unit and the Homicide Unit are continuing to investigate.
