Two people are in custody and facing multiple charges after they led officers on a pursuit following an attempted traffic stop on Saturday afternoon, August 7, 2021.
According to Winnipeg police the Major Crimes Unit were investigating an incident near Andrews Street and Dufferin Avenue when they saw a vehicle they believed was connected to the investigation. When officers attempted a traffic stop the vehicle drove away and fled southbound over the Slaw Rebchuk Bridge.
Officers with help from the Tactical Support Unit forced the vehicle to a stop at Owena Street and Alexander Avenue. The driver and passenger were arrested. Officers then located a loaded sawed-off shotgun in the vehicle.
Officers charged 19-year-old Harry James Richard for his alleged involvement with Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, Possess Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm, Possess Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized and two counts of Possess Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order.
The 31-year-old driver was charged for their alleged involvement with Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, Possess Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm and Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm.
