Police proudly present puppies

Winnipeg Police Service K9 unit proudly presented nine new puppies as part of their breeding program.

The five female and four males were born on October 12, 2023 to Police Service Dog Arrow and fathered to PSD Jury.

Arrow is a first-time mother and required an emergency C-section and were slightly premature.

The K9 unit members took turns to help the puppies feed as the pups mom was still learning how to nurse. Shortly after the births Constable Moreau and his wife took the litter to their home. They turned one of their bedrooms into a whelping room so that around-the-clock care can be given.

One of the pups was not gaining a healthy weight so a foster dog, who was already nursing, was used. The foster mom “Naomi” immediately began feeding and nurturing the pup. After a couple of weeks, the pup was strong enough to return to the litter.

Before any formal training can begin the new pups will be raised by a police quarry member. The quarry member will bring them to work every day and will travel in a police cruiser in a crate to experience the sights and sounds of police work while still young. Winnipeg is one of a few police agencies that use this immersive approach to training and socialization.
