Police officer punched in the face during weapons arrest

A Winnipeg Police Service officer suffered minor injuries after getting punched in the face while trying to arrest a suspect.

Police say that officers were patrolling in the 200 block of Austin Street North when they noticed a group of males in the back lane. One of the males was seen brandishing a machete. Officers approached the male but he fled on a bike.

Police followed the male to a nearby yard. The suspect resisted arrest and struck the officer in the face.

A search of the suspect found two machetes with 12 and 14 inch blades and a homemade throwing star.

20-year-old Ryan Chase George has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Possession of a Weapon (x2)
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition (x3)
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x3)
  • Assault a Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer

George was detained in custody
