Police officer cleared in IIU shooting investigation

Winnipeg police officer cleared after IIU shooting investigation.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) conducted an investigation into the shooting of a male armed with a knife on September 27, 2022.

According to the IIU officers were executing a warrant at a Barber Street residence around 8:15 am. Once inside the officers located the armed male. One officer fired a taser at the man but the male left the hose and fled from police. After a foot chase officers ordered the man to drop the knife and one of the officers discharged his service firearm hitting the man. The suspect was taken to hospital in unstable condition but soon upgraded to stable.

IIU investigators reviewed a number of items during the investigation including:

  • WPS investigative summary report;
  • WPS officers’ notes and narratives;
  • WPS officers’ supplementary reports;
  • audio recordings of WPS radio communications;
  • Forensic Identification Service reports;
  • photographs of scene and exhibits;
  • video recordings from various locales and enhancements;
  • medical reports concerning the affected person; and
  • Conductive Energy Weapon downloads and analysis.

Following the investigation the civilian director of the IIU determined that there were no reasonable grounds to support any charges against the subject officer.
