Winnipeg Police and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection have teamed up to launch a new online campaign against child abuse to recognize October as child abuse protection month.

The Winnipeg Police Child Abuse Unit received 530 reports of child abuse in the last year alone but police know that the vast majority of incidents go unreported. Investigators from the unit believe that in many cases someone is aware of the abuse that is taking place.

The campaign and “You have a duty to report“, video produced by Winnipeg Police are designed to prompt someone with knowledge or suspicion that child is being harmed to come forward and report.

Dzikowicz said “Reporting demonstrates the power one person has in stopping the exploitation of children. If your gut tells you that something just isn’t right, take the time to report the information to police, child welfare or Cybertip.ca”.

If you know or suspect a child is being hurt or exploited you have a responsibility to contact the authorities.
