Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit members are investigating the death of a 17-year-old male.
Police say that they received a call about an in progress break and enter in the 700 block of McGee Street around 9:00 pm on Sunday, March 3, 2019.
Police arrived within minutes and as they entered the home saw the victim being assaulted by a 29-year-old male with a weapon. Investigators say that officers shot the assailant in order to stop the assault on the teen.
Police say that the assailant forced his way into the home and was not known to the victim.
The 17-year-old victim, Jaime Adao, was taken to hospital in critical condition but died soon afterwards.
The 29-year-old accused was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition.
This is the second police involved shooting in just over a week and the fourth since the beginning of 2019 by Winnipeg Police.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has assumed the portion of the investigation involving the police shooting while the Homicide Unit will conduct the investigation into the attack and killing of the teen.
Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information specific to timelines leading up to the incident to call 204-986-6508.
